B.Sc English Solved Papers

BSc Punjab University 2010
English BSc.
Time: 3 Hours

Paper (Compulsory)
Marks: 100

Attempt any two questions from section-A. Section-B is compulsory.
SECTION-A
Q.1 (a) The open Window by H.H. Munro is story full of suspense and irony that keeps the readers interest alive till the final sentence. Comment.
Ans: The British novelist and story writer H.H. Munro wrote under the pseudonym (pen name) of "Sake". The role of open window in the story "The open Window" has a very important function. It reveres as a stimulus (that roses energy) for Vera to invent the sad and tragic romantic tale of the death of Mr. Sappleton's melancholic three years long wait for their return.
From the very beginning this story creates suspense and creates suspense and captures the reader's attention till the end. Vera (young girl) says to Framton (who comes from city to village in order to get piece, because he suffers in nervous disease). "My aunt will be down presently" and is seated in the Drawing room by Vera. I imaginative and clever Niece of Mrs. Sappleton had a little talk before the arrival Mrs. Sappleton. It was October and window was lying open in the room. The story presents a strange , complex situation. In which the characters ever did not understand what was happening. It creates suspense. The suspense is partly broken when Framton came to know that Vera in fact had' invented" the story of Mrs. Sappleton's tragady, because "Romance" at short notice was her specially but for what purpose he could not say. But Mrs. Sappleton's and her brother continued to be in suspense about the reason of Framton's sudden running out. All the above suspense of the irony which here means absence of coplete understanding. We do not know at the start that Vera told her story without understanding and she would be falsified by the appearance of the male member of the family. The male members and Mrs. Sappleton did not understand or were not allowed to understand why actually the stranger had run out. However, the reader knows some of the matters completely what ever some characters, do not know. This dramatic irony makes the story really appealing, except of irony and suspense, the characters are presented naturally through conversation and incident. We come to know that how much Vere is clever at Framing Stomes or romances Framton is horrified by seeing the ghosts of Mr. Sappliton and his brother along with dog, arrived in the room through the open window because "Their shoes were muddy". Aunt who knows about Vera's story telling and foolish attitude, but does not check her rudely.
Q.1 (b) Write brief notes on
(i) Mrs. Sappleton (ii) Framton Nuttel
Ans: Mrs. Sappleton
Mrs Sappleton was an elderly, and respectful women. She was Vera's aunt. She was dignified in appearance and attitude. Apologized to Framton for being late wanted to see him satisfied and happy in her house. She was kind's generous and sympathetic to Vera. Do not question her harshly on whatever she said or did. But failed to understand her inner nature, desires and longings (story feelings or wishes). Not actively conscious of her duty to Vera. Did not make proper arrangement for her psychological or psychiatric cure in different modern ways. Did not provide a suitable atmosphere, environment or company to her. A very loving and faithful wife and sister, waited for her retiring husband and brothers anxiously. A serious , sober observer of life and its problems. Did not become emotional or energy on small or even big points or in situations that involved differences with others. Looked at life steadily and saw it whole, patiently too, but a little selfishly. "The name of Mrs. Sapleton makes us remember two thing (i) Sap (ii) Simpleton.
She is the vital face circulating in plants. It is also soft outer layer of wood. It is figuratively insidious or slow undermining of belief, resolution etc. In (American) slang, it is to undermine or make insecure by removing foundations. Mrs. Sappleton is the juice or the heart of the family. And she helps Nuttel in becoming more and more nervous by underling his belief that the three fellows would soon return.
(ii) Framton Nuttel
Framton Nuttel was an elderly man of great experience. Tired of mechanical and noisy city life. In search of country peace and silence. He suffers in nervous disease and becomes more nervous after listening the story about the open window. Framtons' sister, who had lived in the kill age rectory gave him a few letters of introduction, one of them for Mrs. Sappleton. When he went, he was received and seated in the drawing room by Vera who (is imaginative, clever notice of Mrs. Sappleton, and her specialty is "Romance at short notice was her specialty)" talked to Framton and invented a strange complex story that cause his running away from house at the arrival of Mr. Sappleton and his brother. He is not able to bear shocks easily highly disturbed by differences appeared to discuss mattes of to engage in arguments pleasant in talk. Had good manners kept up pleasant behaviors. Talked softly and sweaty. His name also remember us two things.
(i) Nut (ii) Nettle
Nut is a fruit consisting of hard or leathery shell enclosing Edibel kernal. Here the shell is his head and the kernal is his brain which is very fondly and eagerly eaten up by Vera.
Nettel is a berry shaped fruit of a thorny bush growing in the moors and healths. In this sense, Mr. Nuttel is the fellow who has he stinging hair of nervousness and as soon as Vera (young lady of fifteen) comes close to him , she starts allergic sneezing i,e. starts inventing tragic and semantic stories.
Q.2: (a) Do you agree with Maric Winn that excess T.V. watching is a problem of the same magnitude as an addiction?
Ans: Maric Winn is right when she says that access T.V. viewing is a s harmful as that of the addiction of herein and wine. We are aware that television is present in almost eery home. It can cause people to lose jobs, families. Excessive T.V. viewing as a problem of the same magnitude as that of addiction. It makes the addict passive and imaginative. The addict forgets the world and is last in the world of his imagination. He becomes passive and inactive. The worries and anxieties of real life are left behind by becoming absorbed in a T.V. programm. Just as drug addicts forget every worry of life. Drug and alcoholic addicts have the wrong notion that they can control their addiction as and when ever they like. Similarly people over estimate their control over the television watching. Ever if they put off other activities and spend long hours in watching television. They feel they can easily resume their normal and active life but it is seldom in their power to switch off the television. A heavy viewer is badly influenced by this addiction. He can not resist the urge of viewing television. Thus he keeps on sitting before the T.V. set for hours ad hours. He feels that he caught to do other thing but he can not need, plant his garden, play game or chat with his friends. It shows that these activities vision habit as a drug addicts or an alcoholic. He feels that he has fallen an unfortunate. Victim to T.V. habit but he also feels him time in the modern world is perhaps the most of time most proctors thing but T.V. habit affects the time sense of the viewer very badly. He is least mindful of time. All the other offairs life lose charm to a T.V. viewer.
Q.4: (b)What method could parents adopt to prevent or lessen T.V. addiction?
Ans: Nobody would live to throw off his T.V. Still we can adopt a few such methods (as parents and individuals) which may prevent or lesson T.V. addiction.
(i) We should try to rise up early in the morning, then offer our progress in time and then go out have a morning walk. There is a very wise saying about sleep early and early rise.
Early to bed, and early to rise,
Makes a man healthy, wealth and wise.
As a parents, we should eye that T.V. should be switches off at the most khabar Namah so that our children can go to sleep early and rise early. We must sacrifice. Our own entertainment for the good nourishment and growth of our children. We may let them watch T.V. only during children hour and not later.
As a student, we should see only a few selected T.V. programmes for quite short sudations. These can relate to news science information, literary and artistic plays and movies, music and songs of the highest order. We may watch the programmes ofter having finished our daily studies and home -work. This modern for this we will have to struggle, hard work. If we have passion for doing something, something un-usual, them, T.V. addicts is not fairs, we should develop a habit of reading, through book, and from other resources. Our leader Quaid's adivce is fit in this matter he said:
"Student's attention should only remain on getting knowledge; In this way we make progress and serve of our nature and country."
As individual , we should busy oneself in healthful activities, for examples visit our relatives, friends, going in parks, mutual communication about some important issues, related to country, nations its polities etc. In this way, we can lessen our T.V. addition.
Q.5: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions in your own words.
Teaching, more even that most other professions, has been transformed during the last hundered years from a small, highly skilled profession concerned with a minority of the population, a large and important branch of the public servile. The profession has a great and honorable tradition, extending from the dawn of history until recent times, but any teacher in the modern world who allows himself to be inspired by the ideals of his predecessors is likely to be made sharply aware that it is not his function to teach what he thinks, but to instill such beliefs and prejudices as are thought useful by his employers. In former days a teacher was expected to be a man of exceptional knowledge or wisdom, to whose words men would do well to attend. In antiquity teachers were not an organized profession and no control was exercised over what they taught. It is true that they were often punished after wares for their subversive doctrines. Socrates was put to death and Plato is said to have been thrown into prison but such incidents did not interfere with the spread of the doctrines.

Q.6: As a news reporter make a survey report on the use of mobile phone among students with suggestions.
Ans: Date 14 Augest 2010
To
The Editor
"The Pakistn times" Faisalabad.
From: X.Y.Z., staff reporter " The Pakistan Times" Islamabad,
Subject: Usage of mobile phone among students
Introduction:
As I have been assigned the jobs of reporting on usage of mobile phone among students, its uses and abuses . It is according to the terms of references mentioned in our directions. report with conclusion:
The report visited an educational institute and was baffled to see the extra-ordinary usage of mobile phones among students, some students were listening music other were making chat some students were messaging at very high speed. This usage of mobile phone has taken students away from their studies. Instead of study that is their first and foremost oblige and duty as a student, they indulge in the meaningless and earth activities.
Only some students use mobile phones for educational purposes. All the coins have two sides. Everything has positive as well as negative aspect. And it is up to the man how, he use it of his benefit some students wee getting information though the use of internet mobile phones helps students to deal with class attendance when he is late and mobiles allow parents to get their children's where about . But this extra usage of mobile is for another also. Now its has become to many people a symbol of social status students use it not for their need and advantage but to show off their wealth for those who are not financially strong. Mobile has become necessary for those who want to maintain their standard in a society. For their , it has become a fashion but this can lead to wrong way.
Suggestion:
We can't keep them use, inform and connect students with their teachers and parents, this is good. But the govt. and college principal should enforce the love that . It is use only for curricular activities, for this enforcement, govt. and principles strictly keep an any students. It should depend on individual that that how he use. It for his own benefit. Govt. Should be especially during the exams, and strictly check in this regard. Because its proper and wise use is no less than a blessing for us.
Q.7: Write an essay of 200 words on ONE of the topics:
(i) Beggar Nuisance (ii) Tolerance
(iii) College canton Discussions (iv) Declining educational standard and Remedies.
Decaling Educational Standard and Remedies
The present system of education is outdated and it does not harmonize with our national ideology. It is product of British Rulers in subcontinent, which was designed to create clerks for East India company. Besides it aimed at producing a number of officers for the British administration according a special mentality. It is a legacy of the Bbritish rule which is being, opposed majority of the people. It needs to reform according to desires and needs of the present age and modern demands. This system is bringing about various problems throughout the country. Ours is an Islamic society but our education system is not based on Islamic principals. It produces materialistic approach to life. Subsequently, social injustice, frustration, inequality and seeds of disturbance are growing rapidly. The students of today are becoming disrespectful and immortal to their parent and elders. To curs this situation, Quaranic teachings are needed. We should promote Islamic Ideology and is perusing. Wester socience. We should never forget the we are Muslims. Today, we need technical education, which are producing technical persons and professionally committed will. No doubt we are in need of doctors, engineers, agriculturists, but we also require industrial and technical workers to expedite the speed of progress in the country. If we are inclined to produce more and more exports. The problem of unemployment can be solved to a great extant. One of our major problem is language which is always a hindrance for our students. Most of the books are foreign/ published which our students fail to comprehend. The local published books are not up to the market. Our scholars quest devotes themselves to produce new book according to the needs and demands of our people. Urdu literature should be given place in the syllabi. Our cultural and social values should be high light through our books in order to enhance the interest of the students. Our examination stem is void of required results which needs a drastic change. Our examination does not cheek ability of the candidates, but they make the students get their degree what so ever it is the students depend on chance and cramming that spoil their ability It has become a matter of fact that a good students may foul and secure a third position and a poor student may secure excellent marks. Students are valuable asset of a nation. They constitute a sizeable part of intelligentsias. They are educated devoted, sensible and sensitive. They have vigor, energy and patriotic zeal for the resources of the nation. At length education is the most important department which needs to be reformed in view of the current demands. Those nations have developed much which have made their education according to the tempo of their students. Therefore we should remove all the shortcoming of our education system and review its structure in the light of national, religious ideology and contemporary approach.
Q.8 Translate into English:
Ans: It is the most important need to promote production and reduce prices in the present situation. A common man is disturbed economically. His income is less than his daily expenditures. Owing to in view of low income, the prices of the daily commodities i.e. flour, sugar, vegetables, cloths and shoes should reduce. It is possible only in this way that there will be a great addition in agricultural and industrial productions and the people should work hard day and night.
